From boats to farming, immersive, experiential learning is core to what we do at ACP.

ACP IN ACTION

Check out our recent feature on the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum blog!

“Since the beginning of the school year, two groups of students from the Addison Consortium Program (ACP) and Middlebury Union High School (MUHS) have been coming to Lake Champlain Maritime Museum 2–3 days per week to participate in our boat building program known as Champlain Longboats. The boat is almost done and will be launched this week! Before we launch, we wanted to take a moment to share a little bit more about this journey and a bit about the boat building process from the students themselves.”

  • Charlie Burchard

Under the guidance and supervision of Nick Patch, Director of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum students engage in a year long immersion of learning. They begin with the geology and history of Lake Champlain, Vermont forestry and then the building of a whaler boat. The journey is completed with a maiden voyage on their boat at the end of the school year. This is an anticipated community event attended by participants, sponsors, friends and family.

  • Outdoor Classroom

Our goal for the ‘23-’24 school year is to build a yurt with support from our local community. This will allow students to understand the engineering and mechanics of how to build a yurt, as well as the cultural significance of yurts.

  • Outdoor Adventure

Based on current research, engaging in nature is a beneficial practice for young adults ( all of us, in fact). Students will participate in outings ranging from hiking, fishing, snowshoeing to fun outdoor games. Challenging themselves in a safe and supported venue allows students to build resilience and self worth.
